good morning,

as the EV person for two major programs, it would be helpful to be able to toggle between data sources (data bases) in a single wInsight session.

recently i setup a database and imported a second program dataset (XML) containing 3 different contracts. Administrator appeas to have imported the files correctly (reviewing data fields in Administrator vs. viewing the MDB via MS Access. In Administrator, i can toggle between the programs. however, my client-side install of wInsight (the viewer) continues to display only the EV data from the original program and database.

have a feeling i skipped a checkbox or something but cannot identify.

thank you

There are two possibilities that I can think of. First possibility: you imported the second set of contracts into a new data base. If that is the case, you'll always need to switch data bases in wInsight by clicking File, Select Database. Second possibility: you selected the Merge option, which merged all your data from the contracts into the original contract. I hope you didn't do that! I'd be happy to help you if I had a little more info about what steps you took. Eleanor

hi Eleanor....you are always so patient with me!

in Administrator, I established a second database and tested connectivity.

nextI imported the "new" XML file and recalculated.

after a successful import (no errors reported), I reviewed all the data elements in Administrator for accuracy, then exited Administrator (interestingly, the SAVE function is never abailable in Administrator).

proceeding, I opened the client for wInsight and selected FILE|OPEN. The OPEN DATA SET box appeared, but displayed only the contracts from the prior database (first of two programs I am now responsible for).

tried re-opening Administrator, then opening wInsight client to see if that would make wInsight client feel better. The result was the same. In both cases, Administrator looks like it is pointing to or selecting the proper (second) database, as the second database date items are displayed upon opening Administrator.

my thought was accessing separate databases would be a simple matter of pointing Administrator to the desired database, and wInsight client would read Administrator to determine which datasource to present.

an alternative might be to create an entirely new database into which all contracts are imported, but when we add an EV resource to work with the new (second) program, we would need to re-split the combined database (?).

cheers,

selected the Delta database (which I created this morning)
and closed administrator (actually tried with administrator open and closed).
Administrator never does allow "save".

Also looked directly into the Delta database using MS Access and all three
contracts are there. Just cannot make the files visible in wInsight.

Thanks for the info. I know exactly what you need to do. You need to switch to the new data base in wInsight. (You have to switch independently from Administrator.) To do this, open wInsight but do not open any data sets. Click File, Select Database. You'll see a window with the name of the current data base (your first data base) with a down arrow to the right. Click the arrow and you should see a list of all available databases, including your new data base. Select the new data base, then OK. Now you can click File, Open. And you should see your new contracts.... Once you get the hang of this, it is very easy to switch back and forth between data bases. I do this all the time. If this doesn't work for you, send me an e-mail at info@earnedvalue.biz with your phone number and I'll call you. Eleanor

HA!

got it. problem was my workspace always loads when opening wInsight, so the database select function is not visible. X-ed out of the current contract display and worked back to the FILE|OPEN and the database selection was available. opened into the new contract file.

THANK YOU !!
